History

Tennyson Cemetery lies near the vanished community of Graball in southeastern Washington County. Graball grew up around a post office established in 1876 and, in the 1880s, was a majority-Black Republican settlement whose disputed 1886 election became the subject of a congressional inquiry after the local ballot box was destroyed. The town faded in the early twentieth century as rail lines bypassed it, and Tennyson Cemetery is among the burial grounds recorded under the state's Historic Texas Cemetery program.
