Texas A&M International University began in 1970 as an upper-division branch of Texas A&I in Laredo, serving juniors, seniors, and graduate students in borrowed space. After joining the Texas A&M System and taking its present name in 1993, it opened this campus in north Laredo in 1995, billed at the time as the first new university campus built in Texas in more than a quarter century. Its buildings share a Spanish-influenced style suited to a school that looks toward Mexico and the wider hemisphere. This walk links the library, the student center, the arts center, the science center and planetarium, and the trade research center that reflects Laredo's role as a border gateway.

TAMIU opened in September 1970 as Texas A&I University at Laredo, an upper-division branch of Texas A&I in Kingsville that admitted only juniors, seniors and graduate students; the enabling bill was carried in the Senate by Wayne Connally. Its first 286 students met on the Laredo Junior College campus, where founding president Billy F. Cowart ran the school from a small library carrel. Renamed Laredo State University in 1977, the school entered the Texas A&M University System in 1989 and took its current name in 1993. In 1995 it became a four-year university and admitted its first freshmen, and it began building a new campus on 300 acres in northeast Laredo donated by Radcliffe and Sue Killam; the Killam Library opened that year, and the campus has been described as the first new university campus built in Texas in more than 25 years. A doctoral program in international business followed in 2004, reflecting the border city's role in U.S.-Mexico trade.
