History

William Jones Elliott Heard, born in Tennessee in 1801, received a land certificate from Stephen F. Austin in 1830 and settled at Egypt in Wharton County in 1832 on land acquired from John C. Clark. In April 1836 he commanded Company F in Sam Houston's army at the Battle of San Jacinto, shortly after his Egypt plantation narrowly escaped destruction by the advancing Mexican army. The red-brick residence he built here between 1849 and 1854 later housed six generations of his family.
