History
Robert McAlpin Williamson, nicknamed 'Three-Legged Willie' after a childhood illness left one leg permanently bent so he wore a wooden leg attached at the knee, came to Stephen F. Austin's colony in 1827. He became a prominent figure of the Republic of Texas, serving as a Supreme Court justice, legislator, and Texas Ranger, and Williamson County was named for him. He died on December 22, 1859, at his father-in-law's home in Wharton, where the Texas Centennial commission marked the site in 1936.
