History

First Baptist Church of El Campo was founded amid a wave of church organizing in the town between 1890 and 1898, gathered by J. P. Rutledge and nine original members who first met monthly. In 1898 the congregation bought land at Jackson and Depot streets and built a frame sanctuary, replacing it in 1928 with a three-story brick church at the same location. Church auxiliaries such as the Ladies Aid (later the Woman's Missionary Union) developed over the following decades; the marker was placed in 2009.
