History
Built in 1932 about eight miles east of Shamrock, this five-span bridge carried Route 66 over the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railroad. Its main span uses steel I-beams encased in concrete—a design that lowered the structure and shielded the steel from steam-locomotive blasts—flanked by reinforced-concrete girder spans. Now part of an Interstate 40 frontage road, it is the last vehicular bridge in Texas directly associated with Route 66 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
