History
This burial ground is tied to Fort Elliott, a U.S. Army post established in 1875 in what is now Wheeler County to guard settlers and watch the frontier with Indian Territory until the fort closed in 1890. The post cemetery at Old Mobeetie held roughly nineteen soldiers and several citizens beneath rough rock headstones; before 1909 those remains were reinterred at the San Antonio National Cemetery. The fort was named for Major Joel H. Elliott, killed at the Battle of the Washita in 1868, and its garrisons at times included Buffalo Soldiers and Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the first Black graduate of West Point.
