History
Call Field was a World War I flying field about five miles southwest of Wichita Falls that trained pilots for the United States Army Air Service from 1917 to 1919. Named for 1st Lt. Loren H. Call, an aviator killed in a 1913 crash, the field trained some 3,000 personnel and awarded about 500 sets of pilot's wings, while 34 men died in training accidents. In 1937 the Wichita Falls Junior Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion erected a monument near the old field's gates in memory of those who lost their lives there.
