History
Wichita County was created by the Texas legislature in 1858 from the Cooke Land District but remained largely unsettled until after 1880. In June 1882 attorney Robert E. Huff presented a petition to organize the county, and officers were elected on June 21, 1882, with Wichita Falls as county seat. The county was named for the Wichita Indians who had lived in the area, and its population grew rapidly in the decade after organization.
