History

The Wichita Falls Municipal Zoo grew out of a 1927 campaign by the local Lions Club, and by 1928 it had opened in Scotland Park with roughly 300 animals, largely funded by public donations. Its most celebrated resident was Miss Sugar, an Asian elephant that became the city's unofficial mascot. The zoo lasted only into the early 1930s, and a historical marker was erected in Scotland Park in 2017.
