History
This marker near Raymondville commemorates the great salt lakes of the region, chiefly La Sal del Rey and La Sal Vieja, hypersaline lakes atop salt domes that have yielded salt since Spanish times. Claimed for the Spanish crown after their discovery in the 1740s under the principle that salt belonged to the king, the lakes supplied much of northern Mexico and were prized by Indians, settlers, and soldiers alike. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the State of Texas placed the marker in 1936.
