History

Housed on the lower floor of the Bridgeport Visitors Center, the Bridgeport Heritage Museum interprets Wise County's coal-mining heritage, when as many as nineteen mines operated around Bridgeport in tunnels 85 to 125 feet deep. The Wise County Coal Company was chartered in 1882 and later became the Bridgeport Coal Company, employing some 500 workers at its peak. Additional exhibits cover the railroad, the construction of Lake Bridgeport, the Butterfield stage route, and the natural gas that ended the coal era.
