History
The Wise County Courthouse in Decatur was built in 1896 after the previous courthouse burned in 1895, to a design by the noted San Antonio architect J. Riely Gordon. Built of pink granite in the Romanesque Revival style on Gordon's signature Greek-cross plan, its stone was precut in Burnet County and raised into place by a donkey-powered windlass. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, it underwent a full restoration completed in 2025.
