History

The Marcus DeWitt Carlock House at 407 South Main Street in Winnsboro is a Neoclassical, late-Victorian home built for businessman, lawyer, and politician Marcus DeWitt Carlock (1853-1937), who cast Texas's Third District electoral vote for Woodrow Wilson in 1912. Its temple-front pedimented portico with heavy columns and a second-story balcony are hallmarks of the style. The home stayed in the Carlock family until 1996 and now operates as the Oaklea Mansion bed and breakfast; it became Winnsboro's first National Register listing in 2013.
