History
The Bonus Shack is a small one-room cabin typical of the dwellings settlers built to satisfy the residency requirements of the Texas Homestead Act, under which homesteaders had to live on and improve their claim to gain title to the land. Built in the early 1900s, it was preserved and moved to Plains, where it is maintained as a museum by the Tsa Mo Ga Study Club. A state historical marker interprets the county's homesteading era.
