History

Newcastle Cemetery serves the coal-mining town of Newcastle in central Young County. The town was founded in 1908 around shafts sunk by the Belknap Coal Company, which shipped its first carload of coal to Wichita Falls that year, and was named for the English coal center Newcastle upon Tyne. A post office was moved there from old Fort Belknap in 1908, and coal production continued until about 1942.
