History

This marker recalls a mission visita established in 1750 as part of Jose de Escandon's colonization of the lower Rio Grande. A visita was a country chapel visited periodically by a priest rather than a full mission with resident clergy. Historians note that the site was tied to the nearby Hacienda de Nuestra Senora de los Dolores, founded in 1750 by Jose Vazquez Borrego and regarded as the first Spanish colonial settlement on the north bank of the Rio Grande, whose ranch was served by a priest from Revilla.
