Abilene Christian University opened in 1906 as Childers Classical Institute, a Church of Christ school in a former family home near downtown Abilene. In 1929 it moved to a new hilltop campus on former Hashknife Ranch land northeast of town, and eight buildings rose almost at once. The Depression nearly cost the college that campus until a Burkburnett couple, John G. and Mary Hardin, paid off its debt in 1934. This walk starts at the historical marker and the two 1929 buildings now on the National Register, then heads out to the coliseum and the new on-campus football stadium.
This walk tells the story of how a small church school that started in a family home became a hilltop university. Abilene Christian began in 1906 as Childers Classical Institute, and in 1929 it moved out to former Hashknife Ranch land northeast of downtown, where eight buildings rose almost at once.
The Depression nearly undid that bold move. The Hardin Administration Building carries the name of John G. and Mary Hardin, the Burkburnett couple who paid off the college's debt in 1934 and saved the campus from foreclosure. Its later wings match the Classical Revival original so closely that most visitors never notice them. Nearby Luce Hall, the old Education Building and the other 1929 survivor on the National Register, is considered the least altered historic building on campus, and its patterned brick and cast-stone urns reward a close look.
The walk also shows how ACU grew into its modern self. Moody Coliseum, opened in 1968 with an overtime win over Arkansas State, still hosts chapel and graduation along with basketball, and it's a reminder of an athletics tradition that counts Olympic sprinter Bobby Morrow among its alumni. Along the way, a state historical marker fills in the school's long journey from Childers Classical Institute to Abilene Christian College and, finally, university.
