Alvin is best known as the hometown of Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, but for families the big draw sits just outside town on 86 acres of pasture and pond: Bayou Wildlife Zoo, an open-range park where the animals come to you. This half-day loop pairs that safari experience with a quick swing through Alvin's small but proud downtown, so the kids can meet a giraffe in the morning and the grown-ups can catch a little local history on the way home.
