About this tour

South of Angleton, where the Texas prairie finally gives way to salt marsh and the Gulf, the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge spreads across more than forty thousand acres of coastal wetland. Set aside in 1969, it's a linchpin of the Central Flyway — a wintering ground where hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese and shorebirds ride out the cold months, watched over by alligators, wading birds and the occasional bobcat. This half-day driving tour centers on the refuge's Big Slough Recreation Area: the Discovery Center, the long gravel auto-tour loop, and a boardwalk over the marsh. It's slow, flat, unhurried country best explored at a crawl with binoculars in hand, especially from November through winter when the waterfowl numbers peak. Bring water, sun protection and patience, and let the marsh reveal itself one pond at a time.
