Aubrey wears two nicknames with pride: 'Peanut Capital of Texas,' a nod to the crop that once filled the surrounding farms, and a quieter reputation as serious horse country, with show barns and ranches spread across the rolling prairie. The town's small historic core grew up around the Santa Fe railroad and the congregations that organized before there was much of a town at all. This easy drive visits the two founding churches — one with roots in an 1858 log cabin that doubled as a school, the other planted by Disciples of Christ in 1894 — both of which were flattened by the brutal 1918 tornado and rebuilt by stubborn members. From the old downtown rail district, the loop runs out to Key Cemetery, the pioneer burying ground of the family who helped start it all. Bring patience for back roads.
