Every old city keeps a set of ghost stories, and Austin's are attached to some of its most historic and best-documented buildings. This after-dark route takes the legends straight — the real history first, then the lore that grew up around it. You'll pass the Driskill Hotel with its famous ghost bride, the Governor's Mansion and its bannister legend, the Paramount's backstage ghost-light tradition, and Austin's oldest beer garden, before ending on the wooded slopes of Oakwood Cemetery as the light goes. None of this is presented as proven; it's the folklore Austinites have told for generations, and it's a good excuse to see the historic core after dark. The route runs a few miles by car, ending east of downtown at dusk.
