About this tour

Long before Canyon Lake existed, this stretch of northwest Comal County was quietly being settled by the same wave of 1840s German immigrants who founded New Braunfels — one hand-built log cabin, one country store, one rural post office at a time. This backroads driving loop follows that settlement west from Sattler to the Fischer family's homestead and store, tracing a community that went by three different names before Canyon Dam's floodwaters scattered much of it in the 1960s. It's slower, quieter history than downtown New Braunfels — dogtrot cabins and country cemeteries instead of grand hotels — but it's the same German-Texan story at its roots.
