Rails & Reunion: How the Railroads Made Dallas

Dallas might have stayed a sleepy river town if not for a single accident of geography: the place where two rail lines crossed. In 1872 the Houston & Texas Central reached the settlement from the south, and the next year the Texas & Pacific was lured across town to meet it — the only point in North Texas where the two great trunk lines intersected. That crossing turned Dallas into a shipping hub almost overnight and set the city's commercial destiny. This short walk near Union Station traces how the railroads remade the place: the grand neoclassical terminal that gathered seven lines under one roof, the soaring tower that crowns the modern Reunion district, the old national road that first connected the region, and the great newspaper dynasty that grew up to chronicle it all.
