About this tour

Long before it was famous for its beaches, Galveston threw one of the oldest Mardi Gras celebrations in the country. The island's Carnival dates to the 1860s, faded for a stretch, and roared back to life in the 1980s to become a weeks-long extravaganza of parades, beads, balconies, and balls centered on the Strand — the cast-iron-fronted Victorian business district once called the 'Wall Street of the Southwest.' This short walk loops the heart of the festival footprint, tracing the streets where floats roll, the arches rise, and revelers pack the balconies of buildings that survived the great 1900 hurricane. You'll pass the little square that anchors the concerts, the grand storefronts turned party perches, and the corner where the tradition first took root. Wear beads, look up at the ironwork, and imagine the streets below packed shoulder to shoulder.
