On September 8, 1900, a hurricane came ashore at Galveston and became the deadliest natural disaster in American history. The low, flat island had no defenses, and the storm surge simply rolled over it. What the city did next is one of the great comeback stories in the nation: rather than abandon the island, Galveston built a massive curved concrete seawall to hold back the Gulf, then performed an act of engineering so audacious it still astonishes — it lifted the entire city, block by block, raising more than two thousand buildings on jackscrews and pumping millions of cubic yards of sand beneath them to bring the whole grade up out of reach of the sea. This drive runs the length of the seawall boulevard and past the landmarks of that recovery, ending at the elegant hotel built to tell the world Galveston was open for business again. It's a route about loss, engineering nerve, and a city that refused to drown.
