Every old town keeps its ghosts, but Granbury collects famous ones. The square's restored limestone buildings come with the usual cold spots and slamming doors — and then the town doubles down with two of the strangest legends in Texas. Local lore holds that John Wilkes Booth did not die in a Virginia barn in 1865 but slipped west, tended bar in Granbury under the name John St. Helen, and confessed it all on what he thought was his deathbed. And it holds that the outlaw Jesse James was not shot in 1882 but lived on to 102 under the name J. Frank Dalton and is buried in the town cemetery. Historians dispute both stories flatly — the evidence runs the other way — but Granbury tells them with a wink, and that telling is itself part of the town's history. Walk the square after dark and we will give you the lore, clearly labeled as lore. Believe what you like.
