About this tour

Tucked along the banks of Spring Creek north of Houston, Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center preserves more than three hundred acres of the cypress-and-hardwood bottomland that once covered this whole frontier. Boardwalks wind out over swampy sloughs where bald cypress rise from black water, trails thread pine and magnolia forest, and a re-created pioneer homestead and Native American village bring the region's early history to life. This half-day driving-and-walking tour moves through the park's key spots — the nature center, the cypress boardwalk, the log-cabin homestead — and out to the wild creek that shaped it all. It's free to enter, gentle on the legs, and rich with birds, turtles and the occasional alligator. Bring water, bug spray and a curiosity about what East Texas looked like before the cities came.
