Southwestern Adventist University Campus Tour

Southwestern Adventist University opened in 1893 as the Keene Industrial Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist school that paired classroom study with practical trades, and the town of Keene grew up around it. Its rural Johnson County campus is small and walkable, but it holds a few surprises: a Depression-era brick-and-petrified-wood gateway, a heritage archive, one of the country's larger dinosaur fossil collections, and a public observatory. This short loop takes in all of them along with the town's big Adventist church, in well under two miles.

Southwestern Adventist University began in 1893 as Keene Industrial Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist school that paired classroom learning with practical trades, and the town of Keene took shape around it as the school sold land to Adventist families. The rural Johnson County campus is small and easy to walk, yet it holds more surprises than its size suggests.

Mizpah Gate is the classic photo stop. Students built it in 1937 from brick and petrified wood hauled from Somervell County as that year's senior class gift, naming it for a verse in Genesis, and a state historical marker now tells its story. The Adventist Heritage Center, housed in the campus library, preserves original documents and artifacts on Adventist history in the Southwest and on the growth of Keene itself.

Science is the real surprise. For roughly 25 years Southwestern researchers have been excavating a Late Cretaceous bone bed on a ranch in eastern Wyoming, and the finds come back to the Dinosaur Science Museum and Research Center, which reports more than 45,000 fossils from about 51 species. Thomsen Observatory, established in 1984, opens its 10-inch refractor to the public on regular viewing nights, and Keene's darker rural skies make it worth staying into the evening.

Plan ahead: museum visits are arranged in advance, and finishing at dusk on a viewing night makes the most of both.
