Sam Houston National Forest & the Lake Conroe Frontier

New Waverly is the gateway to a quieter Texas — the piney woods of the Sam Houston National Forest and the shores of Lake Conroe. This is drive-and-explore country, where the roads run under tall loblolly pines, the towns are small and old, and some of them have vanished into the forest entirely. The story here is layered: original settlements founded before the railroad decided which places would live and which would fade; a national forest carved out of cutover timberland and slowly healed into recreation ground with trailheads and a famous long-distance path; a reservoir that reshaped the western edge of Walker County; and, tucked into the record, a Walker County-born pioneer of the woman suffrage movement whose national career began just up the road.
