Tucked between Pasadena and the Clear Lake sprawl, Armand Bayou Nature Center protects some 2,500 acres of tallgrass prairie, forested wetland, and slow bayou — one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the country. More than 370 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians live here, and the best way to meet them is from the water: a paddling trail runs down the bayou past marsh, forest, and open prairie edge. This tour pairs a walk through the preserve's boardwalks and prairie platforms with a kayak launch from the adjacent Bay Area Park. Come early when the wildlife is active and the water is calm, check the center's hours and any launch rules, and bring binoculars — the birding here is exceptional.
