San Marcos Square & Cheatham Street Pub Crawl (Texas State)

Downtown San Marcos packs decades of Bobcat nightlife into a few compact blocks around the Hays County courthouse. This route starts at a converted 1930s filling station west of the square, loops through the bars that generations of Texas State students have claimed as their own, and finishes at the tin-roofed honky-tonk where George Strait played some of his earliest shows. Expect everything from a stein-club neighborhood bar to an Irish pub in an 1880s storefront. Generations of Texas State students have claimed these bars as their own, and several come with stories you won't find at a chain.

The Showdown has been pouring since 1977, and its Stein Club goes back to the bar's early days: membership is limited by the size of the mug rack, and each member drinks from a personalized mug. On the square, Sean Patrick's fills an 1885 building that, by the pub's account, hosted a 1970s music club where George Strait and Willie Nelson performed.

The headline stop is Cheatham Street Warehouse, a 1910 railside grocery warehouse that Texas State alumnus Kent Finlay turned into a honky-tonk in 1974. George Strait played some of his earliest shows there in 1975, Stevie Ray Vaughan had a Tuesday-night residency in the early 1980s, and Finlay's songwriter nights gave many Texas musicians their start. The rest of the route mixes a longtime locals' favorite with a couple of newer spots carrying on downtown's bar tradition.
