About this tour

On the morning of April 16, 1947, a fire aboard a cargo ship in the Texas City harbor set off one of the worst industrial disasters in American history. Hundreds of lives were lost, and the tragedy reshaped how the nation handles hazardous cargo. This drive is a respectful remembrance — not a spectacle. It visits the historical markers and civic places that this port city has raised to honor those who died, to record what happened, and to tell the larger story of a town built on the water: how a village called Shoal Point became Texas City, how a great port and refinery district grew here, and how the community endured and rebuilt after the disaster. Along the way you'll see the museum that keeps the city's memory, homes that survived the blast, and the memorial grounds where the community gathers to remember. Please treat these sites, and the memorial cemetery in particular, as places of quiet reflection.
