Baylor: Sic 'Em Traditions & Game Day

This walk follows the route of Baylor spirit, from the heart of student life on Fifth Street down to the Brazos River where the Bears play. It opens with the campus's most solemn tradition, the memorial to the Immortal Ten, then stops for the long-running Tuesday float social at the student union. From there it heads north to the university's newest arena and crosses the river on the footbridge that game-day crowds use to reach McLane Stadium. Allow about an hour; the out-and-back route is roughly 2 miles, and venue interiors are open only for events and ticketed games.

Baylor wears its spirit openly, and this walk gathers the places where that spirit is easiest to see, from a quiet memorial in the middle of campus to the riverside stadium where the Bears play on fall Saturdays. It is a compact outing that pairs the university's long memory with some of its newest landmarks.

The emotional anchor is the Immortal Ten Memorial, sculptor Bruce Greene's bronze tribute to the ten members of a 1927 basketball traveling party who died when their bus was struck by a train at a Round Rock crossing. Their names are still read aloud to new students during Homecoming week. Just as central to campus life is the Bill Daniel Student Center, home of Dr Pepper Hour, a Tuesday-afternoon social that dates to the early 1950s and now revolves around floats made with the Waco-born soda.

Down by the Brazos, the story turns to game day. McLane Stadium opened in 2014, and before kickoff first-year students in the Baylor Line, a custom that goes back to 1970, sprint onto the field to form a tunnel for the team. Fans reach the stadium on a pedestrian bridge that spans more than 700 feet of river, with wide views of the water and the Waco skyline, and a bronze of Robert Griffin III, Baylor's first Heisman Trophy winner, stands on the stadium plaza.
