About this tour

Wylie likes to call itself "wide awake," and the slogan fits a town that has always known how to move toward opportunity. Its first settlement, Nickelville, sprang up beside the east fork of the Trinity in the 1850s, drawn by water, the rich Blackland Prairie soil, and the land grants of the Peters Colony. Then the railroad came. When the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe laid tracks just half a mile north in 1886, the whole town simply relocated to meet them and took a new name — Wylie, after the railroad's right-of-way agent. Cotton and, later, sweet onions rolled out on those rails, and merchant families like the Browns built the storefronts, churches, and grand homes that still ring downtown. This short walk threads them together, from the city's founding marker to its pioneer cemetery.
