History
Cat Spring is one of Texas's earliest German settlements, founded in 1834 by the von Roeder and Kleberg families in the Mill Creek valley of Austin County. The name derives from a wildcat encountered at the spring where the settlers first camped, originally called Katzenquelle. The community organized the state's first agricultural society, the Cat Spring Agricultural Society, in 1856.
