History
Baylor County was organized in 1879 with Seymour as its seat, and its first substantial courthouse was a three-story sandstone building erected in 1884 to an Italianate design by Dallas architect James E. Flanders. That structure was renovated in 1917 and its tower later replaced by a dome before it was demolished to make way for the present 1968 courthouse. A pair of stone blocks carved with the date 1884 survive as reminders of the earlier building.
