History

Organized in 1884, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church is the oldest African American congregation in Beeville. Its charter members first worshipped in a schoolhouse donated by Captain A. C. Jones and, served by a circuit pastor, built their first sanctuary on land purchased from Jones in 1893. A larger twin-towered frame building replaced it in 1926, and later structures have housed the growing congregation; the Texas Historical Commission marked the church in 2005.
