History

The city of Temple is named for Bernard Moore Temple (1843–1901), a Virginia-born civil engineer who became chief engineer of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1878 and supervised construction of hundreds of miles of track across Texas. When the railway platted a new town at a line junction in Bell County in 1881, it named the town in his honor. The Texas Historical Commission erected this marker in 2009.
