History
South Belton Cemetery was established in 1851, soon after Bell County and the town of Belton were organized, and it served as Belton's only burial ground until North Belton Cemetery opened in the late 1870s. Its oldest legible death date belongs to Elizabeth Burris, buried on May 21, 1851. A cemetery association formed in 1884 and took control two years later; the City of Belton assumed care in the 1950s and still maintains the site, which received a historical marker in 2003.
