History
The Hays Street Bridge combines two wrought-iron truss spans dating to 1881 that were relocated to San Antonio in 1910, when the city required the railroad to carry Hays Street over its tracks. Its rare Whipple truss with Phoenix columns makes it an unusually significant historic bridge, and it also became a vital corridor linking the East Side's African American community to downtown; the bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
