History
German immigrant and stonemason Johann Heidgen built this two-story house of 16-inch-thick native limestone and caliche blocks about 1882, three blocks northeast of the Alamo, and he and his wife Anna Barbara raised a large family there. One wall connects to a surviving section of the 1718 Acequia Madre de Valero, a Spanish colonial irrigation ditch that helped qualify the house for the National Register of Historic Places; it was later designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2003.
