History

First built between about 1738 and 1750 as the parish church of Villa San Fernando de Bexar, this church founded by Canary Islander settlers is now the core of San Fernando Cathedral, among the oldest cathedrals in the United States. Enlarged in the Gothic style in 1868 under architect Francois Giraud, its tower is where General Santa Anna reportedly raised the flag of "no quarter" at the start of the 1836 siege of the Alamo.
