History

The Perote Prisoners marker recalls Texans imprisoned in the fortress of Perote in Veracruz, Mexico, during the turbulent years following the Texas Revolution. About fifty San Antonio men captured by Gen. Adrian Woll's raid in September 1842 were held there, later joined by roughly 200 prisoners from the ill-fated 1842 Mier Expedition. Forced to labor despite their status as prisoners of war, the survivors were released in stages, with the last freed by Santa Anna on September 16, 1844.
