History
Captain Jose Antonio Menchaca was a Tejano officer born in San Antonio in 1800 who joined Juan N. Seguin's company of Texas Mexicans and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. After the revolution he served San Antonio as alderman and mayor pro tem and in 1842 commanded a frontier company patrolling between the San Antonio River and the Rio Grande. He died in 1879 and is buried in San Fernando Cemetery No. 1; the Centennial Commission placed a marker at his grave in 1936.
