History

This marker commemorates the San Antonio home of Jose Antonio Navarro (1795-1871), a rancher and merchant who was one of only two native-born Texans to sign the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence and who helped write the state constitution. Built in the 1830s-1840s of limestone and adobe near San Pedro Creek, the property served as Navarro's residence and is preserved today as Casa Navarro State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark. Navarro was a lifelong advocate for the civil rights of Tejanos.
