History

St. Joseph Catholic Church at 623 East Commerce Street was established as San Antonio's fourth Catholic parish to serve the city's growing German immigrant community. Its Gothic Revival sanctuary, whose cornerstone was laid in 1868 and which was completed in 1871, features stained-glass windows imported from Munich and Stations of the Cross labeled in German. The church became affectionately known as 'St. Joske's' after the Joske's department store built around it in the 1940s when the congregation refused to sell.
