Hallmark University started in 1969 as an aviation school authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration to teach aircraft maintenance, and under Richard Fessler, president from 1974 to 1999, it branched into electronics (1981) and business training. In 1982 it became, by its own account, the first private career school in Texas allowed to grant associate degrees, and a second San Antonio campus opened in 1985. The school operated as Hallmark Institute of Aeronautics and Hallmark Institute of Technology from 1995, became Hallmark College in 2007, launched its first registered-nursing cohort in 2011, and took the name Hallmark University in 2015. Today it offers associate, bachelor's and MBA programs through colleges of aeronautics, information technology, business and nursing, with its main campus on San Antonio's far West Side.
