History

The Columbia Historical Museum in West Columbia interprets the town's role as the first capital of the Republic of Texas, where the new nation's government organized in October 1836. It opened in 1992 inside a former 1950s bank, with exhibits highlighting the Brazos River trade, cotton and cane farming, ranching, and oil. The museum also stewards the adjacent Columbia Rosenwald School, described as the nation's only fully restored Rosenwald School operated as an interpretive center.
