History

Providence Church Cemetery was established in 1864 on the Chenango Plantation in northeastern Brazoria County when the Providence Baptist Church was relocated there from the nearby Waldeck Plantation. It is a historically Black cemetery, and by the mid-20th century the Providence Church and an abandoned railroad station were nearly all that remained of the Chenango townsite.
